5/30/2023 0 Comments Before Versailles by Karleen Koen![]() ![]() Meticulously researched and vividly brought to life by the gorgeous prose of Karleen Koen, Before Versailles dares to explore the forces that shaped an iconic king and determined the fate of an empire. He must face what he is willing to sacrifice for love.īut there are other problems lurking outside the chateau of a boy in an iron mask has been seen in the woods, and the king’s finance minister, Nicolas Fouquet, has proven to be more powerful than Louis ever thought-a man who could make a great ally or become a dangerous foe. The beautiful cheerleader labelled UGLY, not for what is on her outside but on her inside. The outcast who wears the UGLY label as a badge of honour for all the wrong reasons. Every girl has her own unique story and every one somehow manages to get their due in what is a pretty succinct book. The List manages to follow not one but EIGHT different characters all with more depth, poignancy and intricacy then most YA books with a single bland heroine manage. ![]() I loved The List – a story of eight teenage girls, four named the prettiest in their school and four named the ugliest who have to come to terms with both how they see themselves and how others see them. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Techniques that are still used by businesses today.” A morally reprehensible-and very profitable business… Rosenthal argues that slaveholders…were using advanced management and accounting techniques long before their northern counterparts. “Slavery in the United States was a business. The result is a groundbreaking investigation of business practices in Southern and West Indian plantations and an essential contribution to our understanding of slavery’s relationship with capitalism. Challenging the traditional depiction of slavery as a barrier to innovation, Accounting for Slavery shows how elite planters turned their power over enslaved people into a productivity advantage. They took meticulous notes, carefully recording daily profits and productivity, and subjected their slaves to experiments and incentive strategies comprised of rewards and brutal punishment. But after scouring through old accounting books, Caitlin Rosenthal discovered that Southern planter-capitalists practiced an early form of scientific management. The story of modern management generally looks to the factories of England and New England for its genesis. “The evolution of modern management is usually associated with good old-fashioned intelligence and ingenuity… But capitalism is not just about the free market it was also built on the backs of slaves.” ![]() A Five Books Best Economics Book of the Year ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Running on Empty by L.B. It requires us to be who we are.’ ~ Brené Brown ![]() ![]() ‘True belonging doesn’t require us to change who we are. However, that is not to say that Mr Brimson's football hooligans are less well drawn. This expertise shines through in the novel, giving it a unique realism, particularly the police perspective. The author has made something of a study of this subject, not least because he was a policeman and as a result has become an acknowledged expert on the subject. ![]() The Crew is very much a typically British book, in so much as it deals with something peculiar to Britain at the time it was written, the football hooligan. ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments Sold mccormick novel book review![]() Apne Aap (which means self-help in Hindi) is a community-based initiative that began in the red light area of Mumbai in 1998. Inspired in part by Sold, in 2007 a BookBrowse member went to visit the Apne-Aap center in Koltata. I would give it five stars out of five because it was just amazing, fascinating and extremely interesting. The Discussion guide for this book follows the letter below. It is an easy read and really worth reading. This book takes its reader on a roller-coaster of emotions from happiness to sadness, from shock to relief. I would recommend anyone to read this book because it really opened my eyes and made me more aware of what atrocities were happening in the outside world. I especially liked reading about Malala's recovery (although reading about a piece of her skull being placed in her stomach was a shock) and how far she has come in life, it is truly inspiring and it makes the reader question themselves and think about what they can do to help as well. Lakshmi lives with her mother and stepfather in a rural mountain village in Nepal. Its rather unbelievable when we think about it, how such important people barely do anything to help others yet one teenage girl can do so much. Sold is a young adult novel by Patricia McCormick and details 13-year-old Lakshmi’s experiences after being sold into sexual slavery by her stepfather. Although I have heard about what had happened to Malala, when I was reading this book it felt as though it was the first time I was hearing all of it and it shocked me more than ever. I love how the atmosphere and mood changes in the book it is like a novel, not a true story. ![]() The book starts off by talking about Malala's childhood and how everything was normal and how happy her life was until the Taliban showed up. ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments The sandman omnibus vol![]() The other Endless are Destiny, Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium (formerly Delight), and Destruction (also known as 'The Prodigal').
